It’s a sad day in Korean entertainment — actor Song Joong Ki has today, August 27, enlisted and started his two-years mandatory military service with the Republic of Korea Army, taking two years leave from his acting career.
The 28-year-old idol entered into service with the Chuncheon 102 Supplement Unit at approximately 1pm Korean time. Minutes before entering the Gangwon Province base, Song was waved off by over 200 fans and media members gathered outside the compound, many of whom had flown in from China and Japan.

Speaking to his loyal fans, the actor — who also unveiled a military-style cropped haircut — made a short statement: “Thank you for coming so far for me. I will carry out my duties in good health. Please don’t worry.” He then promptly hurried himself into the compound to sign up and undergo a series of medical and physical checks.
Song made his debut in 2008 in the feature film A Frozen Flower and enjoyed a spectacular rise to stardom through numerous roles in TV dramas, most recently starring in 2012 fantasy romance film A Werewolf Boy. He is expected to complete his military duties on May 26, 2015.
