PSY is hoping his music can unite the world. The 35-year-old singer says he is hoping new single “Gentleman”, which currently has over 92 million YouTube views, will bring together the two Korean nations.
“It’s a tragedy,” he says. “We are the only countries divided right now… Hopefully, they will enjoy ‘Gangnam Style,’ ‘Gentleman,’ and all my music videos and choreography.”
PSY adds that he believes his job is to make people laugh and explains he feels remorseful over the two countries current strain. And perhaps it’s already having some effect. Despite leader Kim Jong Un‘s disdain for K-pop, North Korea recreated numerous “Gangnam Style” parodies following the video going viral last summer.
“What I want to do is to write the music the public wants,” the singer-songwriter says of his music. “If you ask me when I’m the most happy, it’s when I see someone else be happy. I like songs that others listen to and like.”
He adds: To be honest, if you look at it in a good way I’m a composer who cares a lot for the tastes of the public, and in a bad way I’m a composer that tries to study the public too closely.”
