Rest in peace, dear friend.
There were heartbreaking scenes at the final day of Jonghyun‘s funeral today, December 21, as the later singer’s SHINee bandmates helped lead his coffin to peace.
Chief mourners Minho, Onew, Key and Taemin were joined by other pallbearers, Super Junior members Leeteuk, Donghae and Eunhyuk and Jonghyun’s family members to move the coffin from the Seoul funeral home to the hearse that would continue the journey to a private burial site.
Minho walked ahead his other band members with a plaque that read “Kim Jonghyun, believer” as hundreds of fans surrounded the Asan Medical Center to bid a final farewell to the late idol singer.
Jonghyun‘s older sister, who had called the police on Monday evening after receiving distressing text messages from her brother, clasped a portrait of her brother.
Gathered friends and family bowed their heads and prayed as the coffin was moved to the hearse, while many of the 500 gathered fans sang Christian hymns.
As is tradition, Jonghyun’s funeral saw three-day of mourning and remembrance beginning on Tuesday, just hours after he passed away. He was today buried at a private burial site. The service itself a private one, attended just by close family and friends.
After the funeral SM Entertainment released the following statement on their SMTOWN website, thanking people for their kind words and support during this difficult time.
“This is SM Entertainment. Today, we sent our artist Jonghyun, who we love, away warmly and peacefully. We deeply thank you for sending comfort to the grieving family, SHINee members, and related artists and staff, who are deeply saddened by the sudden parting. More than anything, we thank and greet the many fans and people in mourning who came to see Jonghyun despite the cold weather. We also thank his colleagues, sunbaes, hoobaes, and entertainment staff who adjusted their schedules in order to attend Jonghyun’s memorial. Because of so many people’s love and comfort, Jonghyun’s final road wasn’t lonely.
