Kim Hyun Joong quietly entered into his mandatory military service last night, May 12, amidst ongoing abuse allegations by his ex-girlfirend.
The former SS501 frontman enlisted into the 30th division Army base in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province on Tuesday. Despite having not given any prior notice or interview, the 28-year-old idol star was still greeted by some 150 fans who had come from as far as Japan, China and Taiwan to bid him farewell.
Moving quietly under a discrete baseball cap, which covered his freshly shaved head, the boy band star was heavily guarded by his agency entourage and security personnel, as well as being accompanied by actor and close friend Bae Yong Joon - also represented by the same agency, KeyEast Entertainment.
The Boys Over Flowers actor had applied to delay his military duties in order to resolve a series of ongoing abuse allegations involving his former girlfriend - known only as Choi - but was not granted a deferred enlistment.
The scandal first emerged in August last year when Choi pressed charges against Kim for physical assault, which she later dropped after he issued an apology. The pair reconciled and went on holiday together only to break up again soon after. What followed made the initial stage of the scandal look trivial, because in January, Choi announced that she was pregnant with Kim's child.

This week, Kim's lawyer announced that Choi had filed a fresh set of charges seeking USD $1.5 million in compensation for psychological damages. It is also reported that Choi has been given over $547,000 in compensation for an alleged miscarriage, which she claims was caused by Kim’s abuse, last year.
It seems like a never-ending scandal for Kim Hyun Joong, but, for the next 21 months at least, he will be dealing with most of these issues in the privacy of his Army base.
