The music world is mourning the deaths of 16 fans and 11 casualties after a floor structure collapsed at an outdoor concert just south of Seoul.
At the 1st Pangyo Techno Valley Festival on Friday, October 17, a group of concert-goers stood over a ventilation grate which became overloaded and then collapsed, causing 27 people to fall 33 feet into an underground parking area.
At the time of the accident — approximately 17:00 KST — the concert was said to be in full swing as iconic girl group 4Minute were on stage before an audience of over 700 people. The victims, mostly young students, are said to have climbed onto the vent covers to get a better view of the idol stars.
Medics were rushed to the scene but were unable to save the lives of many, while others were immediately taken to a nearby hospital.
A rep for 4minute says the group only found out about the tragedy after leaving the venue, adding, "there is no way to measure the grief in our hearts."
To pay respects to the victims and their families, 4minute members HyunA and Gayoon have canceled their immediate activities.
Since the accident it has also been reported that one of the festival organizers — a Mr. Oh — has committed suicide as his body was found descended from a rooftop only 15 minutes after he had tweeted his last sentiments.
Oh posted, "I did my best to live a good life but I am facing something I could never have imagined. I am sorry to my colleagues and to those who have died from the accident. I am truly sorry. I hope you will acknowledge my sincerity. I am most sorry to my father and mother. I am sorry. My precious children. Daddy loves you so much. I miss you so much. My dear wife I am so sorry. Please take good care of our children. I love you so very much."
