2PM‘s Wooyoung has opened up about his own battles with depression.
The singer and band member also revealed that he sees a lot of his own mental health experiences in the late SHINee member Jonghyun.
Ahead of his second solo album release, Wooyoung, 28, spoke with Korea’s TV Report entertainment news outlet at a coffee shop in Gangnam.
When asked about why it took him five years to make a chart comeback, he brought up Jonghyun’s struggles and said, “I recently heard the unfortunate news about Jonghyun. I believe he made such decision because he was struggling far more than me, but I deeply understand him and I believe there are a lot of celebrities who are going through similar situations. I, too, was in a similar situation five years ago.”
He added, “It seemed like my own story. At the time, I wanted to overcome in any way possible. I only thought of the 2PM members. I could’ve ended it but I thought I couldn’t just end it this easily. I held on thinking about how I need to finish strong.”
Thankfully he has overcome his depression and said, “I found a way of my own. I learned to draw, I tried scuba diving, and I relied on hyungs that have more wisdom than I have. I overcame by reading books and watching documentaries.”
Wooyoung also talked about his plans for starting his mandatory military service. “I’m thinking about enlisting in the army in the latter half of this year,” he said. “There’s still this feeling of being left out for me. There’s also the feeling that I’m not a proper Korean man yet. When I hear stories from my friends who’ve served their time in the army, I feel like I’m still young.”
